Economic production quantities
| Roll forming is a mass-production process. Production rate are rapid, but tooling and setup costs are high. Generally, production requirements in excess of 100,000 ft/year are necessary before the process becomes economical. In same cases, depending on the configuration to be produced may be necessary to justify the process. In others, a run of only 10,000 ft may be justifiable. Setup times are lengthy because of the large number of tooling elements that are interrelated. Once operative, however, roll forming is an extremely fast cycle operation. Forming speeds can run as high as 300 ft/min for some shapes and average from 50 to 100 ft/min for most applications. The low labor cost inherent in such a production rate and the savings in materials cost (compared with extrusion or machined parts) provide very low cost production if quantities are large enough to amortize the initial tooling and equipment charges. |
